Imperial Valley Press — Five inmates were injured after a fight involving 17 inmates broke out at Calipatria State Prison on Tuesday, according to a prison official.
Around 10:35 a.m., a dozen inmates reportedly attacked five other inmates in a yard, according to preliminary reports, and response teams soon quelled the violence with use of one pepper spray blast grenade, said Lt. Everardo Silva, prison administrative assistant public information officer.
The five injured inmates were taken to an area hospital for treatment, and inmate movement is limited as prison officials continue to investigate the cause of the fight.
No correctional officers were injured in the incident.
Calipatria State Prison houses about 3,500 inmates, 1,700 of which are serving life and 594 are serving life without the possibility of parole. The prison employs 1,280 people.
